Friends, Family, and Teammates,Adaptive Sports + Women and GirlsThis past April 28 marked the
first-ever National
Adaptive Sports Day, a day to celebrate and support disability inclusion in
sport and recreation. One in four Americans live with a disability, yet they
remain among the most underrepresented in sports and recreation. The Women’s
Sports Foundation also reports that 90% of girls with disabilities do
not participate in sports, and boys with disabilities participate at higher
rates than girls. The S.W.A.G. Team believes that EVERY girl and woman deserves
access to the benefits made possible by inclusion in sports! TOPSoccerUS Youth Soccer’s TOPSoccer (The Outreach
Program for Soccer) is a recreational sports program for
children and adults with intellectual, emotional, or physical disabilities
offered through local US Youth Soccer-affiliated soccer clubs. TOPSoccer
provides people with diverse abilities with the opportunity to play soccer in a
structured environment that is safe, fun, supportive, and inclusive. One of the
differentiators of TOPSoccer is that each participant is assigned a trained
volunteer “Buddy” who is typically a little older and neurotypical. The S.W.A.G. Team x Colonial Soccer ClubThe S.W.A.G. Team is proud to announce
that it is sponsoring the TOPSoccer division at Colonial Soccer Club this fall, and that I (Natalija) will also serve as a volunteer Buddy! The TOPSoccer program at Colonial Soccer Club is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any kids, ages 4 to 19, who have a mental or physical disability.
